On August 11th, hundreds of amateur and elite cyclists will race through the streets of downtown West Chester. This event offers an exciting atmosphere for the whole family to enjoy with races for men, women, and children.

Although the name has changed from the “Iron Hill Twilight Criterium” to the “Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic,” you can still experience the same energy of the speeding cyclists and the crowd cheering them on. Whether you participate in the racing, cheer on your local favorites, or volunteer, you will not want to miss this event.

The Twilight Cycling Classic was established and organized by the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce as a community initiative. On Saturday – June 11, 2005, the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium made its grand debut and thirteen years later, it’s still going strong. This year will be the second of a five-year commitment for Benchmark Federal Credit Union as the title sponsor for the event. This year the activities will start at 3:00 PM.

The Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic offers a wide range of exciting racing events and family-focused festivities that includes:

  • West Chester Dental Arts Kids’ Race (Race starts 3:30 PM) – for children between the ages 3 to 10
  • Tolsdorf Trike Challenge (Race starts 4:30 PM) – double-elimination tag-team (adult-sized ) tricycle race
  • Rothman Institute Amateur Criterium (Race starts 5:45 PM) – amateur cyclists
  • Brumbaugh Wealth Management Pro Women’s Criterium (Race starts 6:45 PM) – women pro cyclists
  • The Iron Hill Twilight Pro Men’s Criterium (Race starts 7:45 PM) – men pro cyclists

Other family-friendly events include the Kid’s Zone, Community Festival, Market Street block party and more!

The Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic is one of 10 cycling competitions that make up the U.S.A CRITS Championship series. The series takes place in various cities across the country; beginning in Athens, Georgia on April 28, 2018 and ending with the finals on September 15, 2018 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

A “criterium,” or “crit,” is a bike race held on a short course, usually less than 1 mile, and run through city streets. The cycling events offer spectators the opportunity to watch top-notch amateur and professional cyclists up close as they pass at top speeds. The Iron Hill Twilight Pro Men’s Criterium will consist of 52-laps, for a total of 45-miles, on a short (0.9 mile) course through the streets of West Chester borough. The cyclists will need to navigate four sharp corners with speeds reaching up to 35 miles per hour.

The race course is as follows: With the exception of the Kids’ race and the Tolsdorf Trike Challenge, cyclists will head west on Gay Street, turn south on Church Street, then east on Market Street, turn north on Matlack Street, and then return back onto Gay Street heading west. The start/finish line will be located at the intersection of Gay and High Streets.
